Grand Living in Launceston, Tasmania

Property Summary

Category:HouseBedrooms:5Bathrooms:5Carport:10Close to:Devonport: 72km (direct line) Burnie: 113km (direct line)

Hillcrest House is currently a residence, however, it has zoning for bed & breakfast etc…

I’m not sure how much they are selling this property for, but I think it is around $2.5 million!

Did I mention it is a heritage listed property in a heritage area?

I’m loving the checkered curtains!

I think the curtains in the kitchen are fab!
I’m a big fan of pretty romans and hollands.
The dining room was a huge let down, no thought put into this room. Even the light fittings look out of place… Well at least it is large for a future owner to transform leading out to the outdoor entertaining area like it does!
And there was nothing heritage about the bathroom!

The master plan…

What did the agent say about the place???
In a commanding position overlooking the city centre and Tamar River beyond Hillcrest House enjoys an incredibly rich local history and in recent times has been the subject of an amazingly detailed and sympathetic renovation. The renovation was lengthy and tedious [18 months] and involved Heritage Architects, specialist designers and dozens of tradesman all with a specific and uncompromising brief to maintain Hillcrests Heritage. Refurbishment of the 776m2 two-storey Heritage Listed building was completed in 2004 Hillcrest House is now a light, bright and airy 5-bedroom home of grand proportions, offering combinations of formal and informal living rooms with many original features retained to remind the casual observer of the propertys colourful history. The property is zoned Urban Residential and does by virtue of this zoning offer a number of discretionary uses such as a Bed and Breakfast, Motel or Multiple dwelling/Apartments. and the Hillcrest House website writes:
In a commanding position overlooking the city centre and Tamar River beyondHillcrest House enjoys an incredibly rich local history and in recent times has been the subject of an amazingly detailed and sympathetic renovation. From its early beginnings as a single storey cottage this distinguished St John Street property became in 1897, at the instigation of Lady Gormanston wife of the then Governor of Tasmania, the Queen Victoria Hospital for Women.Described by the media at the time as “a work of the people” the hospital was in part made possible by the generosity of businesses and community minded individuals which included a fund raising concert at the Albert Hall and public donations of sheets, blankets and furniture.49 babies were born at the property in the first year! The passage of time saw the hospital move to High Street and Hillcrest Housebecame a boarding house for young country women. At the time the Stevenson’s purchased the property Hillcrest House was rented as 6 seperate flats. The renovation was lengthy and tedious [18 months] and involved Heritage Architects, specialist designers and dozens of tradesman all with a specific and uncompromising brief to maintainHillcrest’s Heritage.Refurbishment of the 776m2 two-storey Heritage Listed building was completed in 2004 and is now a far cry from its early life as a women’s hospital.Hillcrest House is now a light, bright and airy 5-bedroom home of grand proportions, offering combinations of formal and informal living rooms with many original features retained to remind the casual observer of the property’s colourful history. The property is zoned Urban Residential and does by virtue of this zoning offer a number of discretionary uses such as a Bed and Breakfast, Motel or Multiple dwelling/Apartments.The Stevenson’s desired to not only undertake a major home renovation but in another sense to indelibly leave their mark forever on one of Tasmania’s most outstanding and unique Heritage properties.
