If live in Melbourne, you’d know what Kryal Castle is.
It was built over 30yrs ago as a medieval castle,
replicating feudal old England.
A tourist business, but many locals regularly
go there, including school groups, like I did many years ago!

It’s located just outside of Ballarat,
which is a gold mining town from the 19th Century,
an hour’s from Melbourne city.

It has a moat, with a large drawbridge,
and when you walk inside (below) it’s very lifelike.
I remember the old cemetery,
and I loved watching the live shows, they were very funny!

The displays at the venue are tired and old,
and not what you would call “cutting edge”,
but it has a charm to it,
albeit a simple one – it really could have done with a
new lease on life, perhaps with this sale, a new owner
will take over with the intention of fixing it up.
I heard on the news a month ago that even a brothel
owner was considering buying it
to showcase an international brothel from there!
(good luck with that mate – Ballarat – I don’t think so!)

Recent expansions over the years included catering
for weddings etc, this is the dining area.

It also became a motel a while ago…

And here’s the Wedding Chapel.
These days Kryal Castle is most infamous as a “rave” venue
for teenagers etc… not getting the best of reputations,
however, I heard they make big money from those nights,
so who knows what’s next – depends on the buyer I guess!

AND here’s what the Agent said about it!

As the Famous Saying Goes “A Man’s Home Is His Castle”
Kryal Castle has been synonymous with Ballarat and the Ryall family for the past 38 years and now for the first time in history is presented as an exceptional opportunity for an astute purchaser to acquire this magnificent property that has played an important role in Ballarat’s history. This magnificent property was 15 years in the making to become one of Victoria’s top tourist attractions and one of a kind in Australia. It was ‘brain child’ and a ‘life time’ dream finally realised by it’s creator Keith Ryall. Kryal Castle is an Australian replica medieval castle located at the foothills of Mt. Warrenheip in Dunnstown, approximately 8km from the Ballarat CBD. It was built in 1972 and opened to the public in 1974 by Keith & Joyce Ryall, who have owned and operated the theme park tourist attraction for the past 36 years. The 10.9 hectare property, which comes complete with bluestone castle, moat, drawbridge, tavern and maze, would be suitable for many different business opportunities, or for private use. In the past, the medieval tourist attraction has been a popular venue for weddings, functions and special events, including large concerts. The Castle has many features including castle towers, large function room, chapel, several accommodation rooms complete with ensuites and many other multi-purpose buildings suitable for an array of options. This is a memorable building and an outstanding property, which presents an extraordinary purchase opportunity.

A brothel may be the only thing that makes money from it. I wouldn't be surprised if (some) people travel for that 🙂

    That's hilarious. I'm sure there's a market for a medieval style house of ill-repute!

It was actually proposed as a brothel, however the public kicked up such a stink that Council had to retract its planning permit for such type business!

I visited Kryal Castle as a fifteen year old (years ago) when my NZ High School Choir did an Aussie tour. The only thing I can remember about it was the torture room, completely grossed me out, especially the display where the guys guts were being eaten by rats *shudder*.
It'll be interesting to see what comes of the place.

Disappointing for such attraction to be diminished into such things. What a total waste.
